Referring Clients to 'Me..time' Pilates

Helping your Clients move well beyond treatment

As a professional helping people improve their health, movement and wellbeing, much of your work is focused on helping them feel and function better.

But what happens next?

For many people, the challenge is maintaining those improvements once treatment becomes less frequent or comes to an end.

Appropriately taught Pilates can provide an important bridge between treatment and long-term independent movement, helping people build strength, improve movement quality and develop the confidence to keep moving well.

At ‘Me..time’ Pilates, my aim is not to replace treatment or rehabilitation. It is to complement the work you have already done by giving suitable clients a structured, progressive way to continue looking after their bodies for the long term.

What is Pilates – and why can it be so valuable?

Pilates is sometimes thought of as stretching, relaxation or something similar to yoga.

It is very different.

Pilates is a structured method of exercise using precise, controlled movement to develop:

- Core strength and stability
- Posture and body awareness
- Balance and coordination
- Mobility and flexibility
- Movement control
- Functional strength for everyday life

Rather than simply making somebody fitter, Pilates teaches people how to move their bodies more effectively.

Clients learn to understand their posture, control their movements, engage the core muscles that support them and recognise unhelpful movement patterns.

Over time, this can help them become stronger, more confident and more capable in everyday life.

For someone who has already benefited from treatment, this kind of ongoing movement education can provide a valuable next step.

From treatment to long-term movement

Treatment may address pain, restriction or a specific musculoskeletal problem.

Rehabilitation may begin the process of rebuilding movement and function.

But maintaining those improvements requires something more:

The person needs to keep moving.

That is where Pilates can play an important role.

My aim is to help suitable clients take what has been achieved through treatment and continue building upon it through regular, carefully taught movement.

In simple terms:

You help them address the problem.
I help them continue moving well.

It is a partnership between professional treatment, appropriate exercise and the individual's own long-term self-management.

Who may benefit?

My classes may be particularly useful for people who want to maintain improvements achieved through treatment or who need a supportive route back into regular exercise.

This may include people experiencing:

- Persistent back or neck discomfort
- Poor posture or postural imbalance
- Reduced mobility or flexibility
- Loss of core strength or stability
- Arthritis or osteoporosis
- Recovery following orthopaedic surgery, when appropriate
- Balance issues or reduced confidence in movement
- A return to exercise following injury, illness or inactivity
- General loss of strength and mobility associated with a sedentary lifestyle

Every client is encouraged to work within their own ability and progress at a pace appropriate for them.

Where necessary, I will also ask clients to seek advice or clearance from their healthcare professional before beginning or progressing their exercise.

Why refer to ‘Me..time’ Pilates?

Not every Pilates class is the same.

If you recommend exercise to a client, I understand that you need to feel confident about where you are sending them.

I have been teaching Pilates for over 17 years and have worked with people of different ages, abilities and levels of exercise experience.

At ‘Me..time’, clients benefit from:

✔ Over 17 years' Pilates teaching experience
A depth of experience developed through teaching thousands of hours of Pilates and working with a wide variety of clients.

✔ Small-group classes
Allowing me to observe clients closely, provide individual guidance and offer appropriate alternatives where necessary.

✔ A structured Pilates Foundation Course
Where appropriate, new clients learn the essential Pilates principles, understand how to activate their deep core muscles and begin developing safe, effective movement patterns before progressing further.

✔ Progressive, carefully planned classes
Sessions are designed to develop clients over time rather than simply repeating the same collection of exercises each week.

✔ Individual progression
Clients are encouraged to work within their own ability and develop strength, mobility and confidence at an appropriate pace.

✔ A supportive environment
Particularly important for people who may feel apprehensive about returning to exercise following pain, injury, illness or a long period of inactivity.

✔ Respect for your professional role
Pilates is not a substitute for diagnosis, treatment or rehabilitation. I value the expertise of the professionals involved in a client's care and am very happy to work alongside their guidance.

The ‘Me..time’ Foundation Course

One of the things that particularly distinguishes my approach is that I don't expect somebody who has never done Pilates simply to walk into a regular class and somehow know what they're doing.

Where appropriate, new clients complete The Missing Manual to Mat Pilates – my Pilates Foundation Course.

This introduces the principles that underpin the exercises, including breathing, posture, deep core activation, alignment and movement control.

It means that when somebody joins a regular class, they already understand the foundations of Pilates and can get considerably more from their sessions.

For clients coming from treatment or returning to exercise after a long absence, that additional preparation can be particularly valuable.

What happens when you refer someone?

I've deliberately kept the process simple.

1. Initial conversation
I talk to the client about their goals, relevant medical history and any current concerns.

2. Taster class
They can experience a class, meet me and decide whether ‘Me..time’ feels right for them.

3. Foundation Course – where appropriate
They learn the essential Pilates principles and establish the foundations for safe, effective movement.

4. Small-group Pilates
They progress into regular, carefully planned classes where they continue developing strength, posture, mobility, balance and confidence.

5. Long-term movement
The ultimate goal is simple: to help people remain active, capable and confident in their bodies for years to come.
